Spider Vein Treatment
The treatment of spider veins of the legs has become more predictable and reliable with the introduction of newer laser vein treatment technology. Dr. Mitchell uses the Candela V-BeamT Pulsed-Dye Laser and the Cynosure Nd:YagT Laser to produce effective results. Both of these lasers work on the same principle of selective damage to the vessel, with limited or no damage to the surrounding skin.
The vein treatment consists of tracing the vein with a pencil-like tool which delivers the laser's light and energy into the vein. The vein is damaged by the heat, causing it to collapse upon itself and disappear. The patented Candela Dynamic Cooling DeviceT cools the skin both before and after the pulse of light energy with a spray of cryogen. This spares the skin from heat damage, allowing more energy to be used in treating the vessel, and at the same time making for a more comfortable vein treatment for the patient. |

Leg vein treatment results in a "cat-scratched" appearance of the vessels for several days. This is due to increased blood flow from inflammation around the vessels. As the vessels occlude and scar, they gradually disappear. Some patients will have a brownish appearance along the vessel which results from the breakdown of blood pigments. This can persist as long as six months when it occurs.
Although laser vein treatment is a relatively simple procedure, your legs won't look better for three to six weeks or possibly longer. Additionally, larger vessels (over 1.5 mm) will still need Sclerotherapy, which is the injection of a solution through a small needle.

Treatment of the face usually causes no bruising, but if slight bruising does occur, it generally resolves in one to three days, as opposed to the two weeks of older lasers. Treated areas will turn red for several hours, and patients may notice a temporary prickly sensation. Depending on the extent of treatment on the face, there may be swelling for several hours or more. However, treatment of small areas of facial vessels usually causes no side effects that would prevent patients from returning to work and other activities.
